Illumio CEO Andrew Rubin Calls on United States to Create West Point for Cyber in Commentary Published Today in Fortune

Fifth Service Branch Needed to Provide Strong Offensive and Defensive Capabilities to Deter Cyber Threats Targeting U.S. Digital Information Assets

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – July 8, 2015 Today Fortune published an commentary written by Illumio CEO and co-founder Andrew Rubin titled "America's secret weapon against cyber attacks? Try a new military for cyber crimes." In it, he calls for the creation of a “West Point” for cyber. According to Rubin, such an institution is needed now to prepare a new class of leaders focused on defending one of our nation’s most critical resources and underpinnings of our modern infrastructure — digital information.

While effective operations and commands have been established to protect the U.S. against cyberwar, Rubin states that the time has come for the creation of a service academy based on the same civil and moral leadership traditions that are part of the fabric of institutions such as the United States Military Academy at West Point.

According to Rubin:

Cyber requires a unique military discipline, not just an intelligence operation, to be globally effective.  Not only does the promise of a new branch of service focused on cyber threats promise strong offensive and defensive capabilities, it potentially will help deter state-sponsored aggression targeting the U.S.  And it will bind the nation, across social, geographic and political lines on building a long-lasting institution to lead the way in defending our country and economy in the 21st century.
